Volunteering is a work of getting closer to God:

Islam calls for volunteering work, and promised great reward for it. Every work done by man for the benefit and service of the people it is rewarded as a charity.
The prophet (pbuh) said: “every Muslim has to give charity.” The people asked, “O prophet! If someone has nothing to give, what would he do?” He said, “he should work with his hand, benefit himself and give charity.” They asked further, “what is he cannot find even that?” he replied: “he should help the needy who appeal for help.” [Narrated by Al- Bukhari and Muslsim].

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) as saying:
There is never a day wherein servants (of God) get up in the morning, but are visited by two angels. One of them says: 0 Allah, give him more who spends (for the sake of Allah), and the other says: 0 Allah, bring destruction to one who withholds. (Sahih Muslim 1010: Book 12, Hadith 73).
